So, you have decided on a niche or content type for your blog and you found a name that fits and the domain is available! the stars have aligned and all is good in the world and we can start blogging now, right?
Um, no.
Before you rush off and register that domain you have a decision to make.
- You COULD go with a free blog platform like Blogger or WordPress and have your blog address be something like “myblogname.wordpress.com” but that is a bit of a pain in the toosh for your followers to remember and not everyone will think to bookmark you.
- So you could register a domain and use the free platform and pay a small fee to have it LOOK like it is hosted by you. That works, and may be a good option to start, but you are then limited by the terms of that hosting platform.
- The more costly option is to purchase hosting. Hosting websites had become insanely cheap and you can still use the popular platforms you enjoy but on your own space and without all of their content restrictions. This also allows you to better track where your traffic comes from and leaves to as well as other wonderful data that will be come important to you later . Also most hosting companies include your domain registration in your fees.
What hosting style you use will be ultimately based on what it is that you want for your site/blog. Will you need a domain relevant email address? Do you already have a large following elsewhere and think you might need a bit more bandwidth than most? Will you need shopping cart/merchant services?

Disclosure is very important and we will discuss that later when we go over some ideas for monetizing your blog.
Take a bit of time, shop around and find the best hosting/registration options for you.
