Yes, I realize that it is January and I still have a good 4-6 weeks before I can even start seeds indoors, let alone tackle my frozen soil.
I am Mom, hear me roar. By the time seed starting and soil turning/prepping comes around I will also be swamped in baseball practices/games as well as color guard championship competitions, school/athletic fundraisers, lawn mowing, grill cleaning and Spring maintenance chores that all come to a head in those 4 vital weeks. NOW is the best time for me to plan out my plot and decide how much of what I need to plant. This gives me ample time to acquire any seeds I need more of, prep my potting mix, check my soil amendment supplies and soil quality as well as order items I need to for canning and preparing all of the salsas, sauces, and jams I hope to can this year.
In the past, I did this with graph paper and colored pencils, or on a spreadsheet program on my computer. By the time I was done I would use an entire pad of graph paper and/or printed out multiple versions of the spreadsheet.
Not any more. This year I am trying the Garden Planner from GrowVeg.com.

With GrowVeg.com it is easy to draw out your garden plan and decide how best to plant it. The GrowVeg.com Garden Planner software shows how much space plants require and how to group them for maximum success, removing the need to look up planting distances and crop families.
Growing advice is just one click away as you select the plants that you wish to include, enabling you to solve problems and maximise your harvest from the space you have. An annual subscription costs just $25.
In addition to planning, GrowVeg.com allows you to opt into email reminders for when to sow and harvest your crops, etc and subsequent years, they remember your previous plantings and offers reminders and suggestions regarding crop rotation. there is also the ability to make notes of your crop performances built into the program. All of the things I had to do with a calendar, my gardening books and a giant three ring binder , not to mention the costs of my graph paper, ink and my time.
Yes, my time. For that alone, I feel the 25.00/yr investment is worth it. The savings on the supplies I will no longer be needed is a plus too!! I can make more room on my bookshelves now!
